Are Paper Straws Truly More Environmentally Friendly Than PLA Straws?

{TABLE_OF_CONTENT} [Hide]

Both paper and PLA straws offer eco-friendly advantages, but their impact depends on how they’re used and disposed of. Paper straws are biodegradable and compostable in almost any environment, including backyard compost, and break down quickly.

PLA straws, while also compostable, require commercial composting conditions to decompose properly and won’t break down in landfills or natural settings.

If disposal infrastructure is available, PLA can be a strong option. But in terms of universal compostability and biodegradability, paper straws are generally the greener choice.
