What Are the Differences Between Food Storage Bags and Foodservice Films?

Food storage bags and foodservice films serve similar purposes in preserving food, but they’re designed for different applications and environments.

Food storage bags are typically made of polyethylene or polypropylene and come in a range of sizes and thicknesses. They are ideal for storing solid or semi-solid foods in bulk or portion sizes, often used in back-of-house food prep or takeout. Their sealable or zipper-top closures help prevent leaks and contamination.

Foodservice films, often referred to as plastic wrap or cling film, are thin, stretchable sheets primarily used for covering trays, wrapping ingredients, or protecting items in storage. They offer excellent clarity and flexibility and are ideal for quick coverage of large surfaces or irregular shapes. Unlike bags, films do not seal tightly unless paired with containers.

In foodservice operations, both are essential: bags for containment and portion control, films for surface coverage and freshness retention.
