Is PS Cutlery Suitable for Hot Foods?

While polystyrene (PS) cutlery is a popular choice for its crisp appearance and affordability, it is not the most suitable option for hot food applications. PS has a lower heat resistance compared to materials like polypropylene (PP), typically softening or warping at temperatures above 90°C (194°F).

When exposed to high heat, PS utensils can lose structural integrity, potentially leading to breakage or discomfort during use. For this reason, they are best suited for cold or room-temperature dishes such as salads, desserts, and sandwiches.

Foodservice operators serving hot entrees, soups, or stews should consider alternatives like PP or compostable CPLA cutlery, which offer better performance in high-temperature settings.
